Most tires last between three and six years, but Tempe’s heat can shorten that range. Mileage matters, too. Why Tempe heat affects tire life
Arizona heat places extra stress on rubber. Hot pavement raises tire temperatures during every drive, especially on long freeway trips. Ultraviolet sunlight also dries and hardens the rubber over time. This process, often called dry rot, can weaken the tire even when the tread still appears reasonably deep.
Your tires also work harder when they are underinflated. Low pressure creates more flex in the sidewall, which produces additional heat and increases wear. In severe cases, excessive heat can contribute to a tire failure.
Protect your tires by parking in a garage or shaded area whenever possible. Avoid leaving a vehicle parked in direct sunlight for long periods, and inspect the sidewalls regularly for fine cracks. Consider age as seriously as mileage, particularly if you drive only a few thousand miles each year.
For many drivers in the Valley, replacing daily-use tires around three to four years is a sensible precaution. Tire manufacturers and vehicle makers may provide different age recommendations, so check your owner’s manual and the tire maker’s guidance. As a conservative rule for Arizona driving, have tires inspected carefully after five years and avoid using tires that are six years old or more without professional approval.
Check the tire’s age, not just its tread
Find the Department of Transportation, or DOT, code on the tire sidewall. The final four digits identify the week and year the tire was manufactured. For example, a code ending in “2423” means the tire was made during the 24th week of 2023.
The manufacturing date is not the same as the date you purchased the tire. A tire could have spent months in storage before installation. Record the date code whenever you buy tires, then inspect them annually as they age.
Replace a tire sooner if you find:
- Sidewall cracks or widespread dry rot
- Bulges, bubbles, or cuts
- Exposed cords
- A puncture in the sidewall
- Repeated air loss
- Severe vibration that does not go away after balancing
- Uneven wear that has reached the cords or internal structure
Never attempt to repair a sidewall puncture. Replace the tire and have the remaining tires inspected for related damage or age.
Use tread depth and wear bars as clear warning signs
Tread depth helps your vehicle maintain traction, especially on wet roads. New passenger tires commonly start with around 10/32 to 12/32 of an inch of tread. The legal and widely accepted replacement limit is 2/32 of an inch, but waiting until the last possible moment is not a good strategy for everyday driving.
Look inside the main grooves for raised strips of rubber. These are tread-wear indicators, also called wear bars. When the surrounding tread becomes level with these bars, the tire has reached approximately 2/32 of an inch and should be replaced.
Use a tread-depth gauge for the most accurate measurement. You can also perform a basic penny check by placing a penny upside down in the tread groove. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, the tread is at or near the replacement limit. Check several grooves and locations because a tire can wear unevenly.

Replace tires before they reach the wear bars if you regularly drive on highways, carry heavy loads, drive in severe rain, or notice reduced traction. Deeper tread provides more safety margin when road conditions change.
Check tire pressure when the tires are cold
Check pressure at least once a month and once a week during the hottest part of the Arizona summer. Also check before a long road trip. Measure pressure when the vehicle has been parked for at least three hours or before driving more than a short distance.
Use the cold-pressure specification on the driver’s door-jamb label or in the owner’s manual. Do not use the number molded into the tire’s sidewall as your normal target. That number is generally the tire’s maximum permitted pressure, not the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended setting.
Expect pressure to rise after driving. Heat from the road, the weather, and tire flex can increase the reading. Do not release air from a hot tire simply because the number is higher than the cold specification. Let the tire cool, then adjust it to the manufacturer’s recommended cold pressure.
Check all four tires and the spare. Look for slow leaks if one tire repeatedly loses pressure. A damaged valve stem, bent wheel, puncture, or bead leak may be responsible.
Correct pressure helps your tires wear evenly, improves handling, and reduces rolling resistance. It also helps limit heat buildup in Tempe’s hot conditions.
Rotate your tires on schedule
Rotate your tires about every 5,000 to 7,000 miles, or follow the interval in your owner’s manual. Many drivers schedule tire rotation with every oil change to make the service easier to remember.
Rotation moves each tire to a different position on the vehicle. This helps even out the different forces placed on front, rear, and drive wheels. Front tires on a front-wheel-drive vehicle often wear faster because they handle steering, acceleration, and much of the braking.

Check alignment when the wear pattern looks uneven
An alignment problem can destroy a relatively new set of tires. Have the alignment checked if your vehicle pulls to one side, the steering wheel sits crooked while driving straight, or the tread wears faster along one edge.
Potholes, curbs, rough roads, and worn steering or suspension components can change wheel angles. Even a small alignment problem can create constant friction between the tire and pavement. In Arizona heat, that extra friction can accelerate wear and raise tire temperatures.
Do not replace tires without investigating the cause of uneven wear. New tires may develop the same problem if the alignment, suspension, or steering issue remains unresolved.
Remember the connection between tires and brakes
Your tires and brakes work together every time you stop. Worn tires have less traction, while worn brake pads, damaged rotors, or a brake problem can affect stopping performance and create unusual tire wear.
